AVCA Top 25

LEXINGTON, Ky. –
University of Dayton volleyball is ranked 21st during its 21st consecutive week in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 poll released on Monday.

Last weekend the Flyers took home the Green Bay/Country Inn & Suites Tournament title with a perfect 3-0 record. Sophomore Megan Campbell earned tournament MVP honors after registering 41 kills on a .400 hitting percentage while averaging 1.45 blocks per set (16 total).

Dayton's streak of 21 consecutive weeks in the top 25 began on Nov. 23, 2009, ranked 24th. Dayton was tabbed No. 19 in the preseason AVCA poll to mark the second consecutive season in which Dayton has been nationally-ranked in the preseason. Dayton’s highest position in the AVCA poll is No. 12, which came on the weeks of Oct. 15, 2007 and Nov. 22, 2010.

This weekend the Flyers compete in the State Farm Illini Classic with host, No. 7 Illinois. Illini Classic participant Tennessee dropped out of this week’s poll after beginning the season at No. 24. Dayton faces both Illinois and Tennessee on the Saturday, Sept. 3, preceded by a match with Houston on Friday, Sept. 2.

Looking ahead to Dayton’s home-opening weekend on Sept. 9-10, the 2011 Dayton Marriott Flyer Classic features three top 25 teams (No. 21 Dayton, No. 24 Michigan, No. 25 Florida State) plus Pepperdine who is positioned two spots out of the top 25 with 67 votes.

Previously unranked No. 16 Oregon made the largest jump in the poll after defeating top-ranked Penn State and breaking PSU’s 94-match home winning streak. 2010 National runner-up California took this week’s No. 1 spot.
