May 3, 2011

DAYTON, Ohio – University of Dayton volleyball Head Coach Kelly Sheffield announced the signing of Angel Agu to a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday as the fifth signee for the 2011 recruiting class.

Agu, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker, is a graduating senior at Colleyville (Texas) Heritage High School and member of the 900VB volleyball club in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. As a senior at Colleyville Heritage, Agu amassed 322 kills and 270 blocks to be named the 2010 5-5A District Blocker of the Year and listed on the Star-Telegram’s Volleyball Super Team.

“Angel has the potential to be an impact player for us,” Head Coach Kelly Sheffield said. “She is extremely athletic and competitive; and has a fun, out-going, and confident personality. Her coaches talk about her great work ethic and how fast she learns – those are things that I love to hear. Angel was hurt her junior year and that is the reason why she was still unsigned this spring. We just got a lot more athletic with her on the team.”

The Grapevine, Texas native was also named the 2009 District Blocker of the Year and has been named All-District three times and Academic All-District twice. In 2008, Agu helped guide Colleyville Heritage to the 2008 5-5A District Championship.

Agu’s high school and club coach Jamie deTurck added praise, “Dayton is getting a tremendous athlete who is playing at an extremely high level and still has a lot of room to grow. She started really focusing on volleyball, over other sports, just two years ago and her athletic ability, drive, work ethic, and passion for the game has really allowed her to take off. She is really excited about going to Dayton. They are getting a great player and an awesome young lady.”

Agu joins Isolde Hannan, Rachel Jones, Kaitlyn Krause and Brigid Campbell as members of Dayton’s 2011 recruiting class. The Flyers return seven players for the 2011 season which begins on Aug. 26 against North Dakota.
