Eight members of the University of Dayton rowing team were named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete list and one of those student-athletes was a CRCA All-Central Region selection.
Leading the way for the Flyers was Lydia Caldwell who was named to the CRCA All-Central Region Second Team.
Caldwell was also one of eight Flyer rowers named to the 2010 CRCA National Scholar-Athlete Team. Dayton rowers Michele Baeder, Nicole Baeder, Kathering Bruening, Cynde Mason, Erin Quinn, Allison Walden, and Allison Weis joined Caldwell on the team.
Michele and Nicole Baeder both hail from Dublin, Ohio. Michele is majoring in pre-physical therapy and showcases a 3.8 grade point average while Nicole has a 3.6 GPA and majors in marketing.
Bruening was the only sophomore selected to the A-10’s all-academic team and rowed on the Varsity 8 squad this season. Academically, Bruening has made the Dean’s List every semester at UD and is majoring in pre-medicine.
Mason graduated in May with a degree in Spanish and finished her career with a 3.7 GPA. Quinn made it to the team as a sophomore and is majoring in history with a cumulative GPA of 3.8.
Walden and Weis both graduated in May as well. Walden earned her degree in psychology and finished with a 3.8 GPA, while Weis had a 3.7 GPA and completed her degree in dietetics.
This CRCA All-Region honor completes an awards sweep for Caldwell. Caldwell earned a spot on the 2010 Atlantic 10 Rowing All-Academic Team, a First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection and the (CoSIDA)/ESPN the Magazine University Division Academic All-District IV Women's At-Large second team distinction.
Serving as a team captain this past season, Caldwell has been a member of UD’s top boat, the Varsity 8, since 2008. The St. Louis native majored in Biology and finished with a 3.82 cumulative grade point average. She will be attending graduate school at UD beginning in the fall.
To be named to the All-Region team, student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
The Flyer rowers concluded the 2009-10 season competing at the NCAA South/Central Regional.
