BOX SCORE
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton Flyers captured the rubber match in its series with Fordham in dramatic fashion as senior captain Cole Tyrell hit a two-out, two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to win 8-7.
Tyrell’s two-run blast sailed over the scoreboard in left field and sent the entire Flyer roster into a frenzy at home plate as he sprinted in to celebrate.
Jimmy Roesinger also belted a two-run home run for the Flyers, sparking a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning that pulled the Flyers to within 7-6. Aaron Dunsmore had a pair of RBI in the game. Zach Jacob reached base in all five of his plate appearances. He was two-for-two with three walks and two runs scored,
Ian Gardeck earned his second win of the season to improve to 2-1 this season. Gardeck had two strikeouts in three innings of action. Mike Hauschild started the game and went five innings, striking out four.
The Flyers opened the scoring in the first inning after a 22-minute rain delay. Dunsmore had a two-RBI single bringing home Zach Jacob and Joe Gayda after a fielding error by the Fordham outfielder allowed him to advance another base.
Fordham rallied back to score seven unanswered runs from the third through the seventh innings until momentum swung back towards Dayton.
Roesinger drove home Josh Jeffery on a two-run home run in the bottom half of the seventh. Dunsmore was walked and Tyrell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score two more runs for Dayton. The Flyers were unable to further capitalize on the bases-loaded situation without any outs, striking out and grounding into a double play to end the inning trailing by one.
Gardeck was huge in the top of the eighth. After allowing a leadoff double, he retired three in a row to escape the inning. He also retired the side in order in the top of the ninth to give Dayton a last-chance opportunity in the bottom half of the inning.
With two outs, Tyrell got a piece of the first pitch ripping it way deep but way foul. Later in the at-bat, he sent the ball sailing over the score board in left field, scoring Jacob with the tying run and himself with the winning run.
Dayton will take a breather from midweek action to focus on final exams this week. They resume play against Xavier at Time Warner Cable Stadium on Friday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
