DAYTON -- The University of Dayton football team is in the home stretch of its 2014 spring practice season. The Flyers have just four more practices before their annual Spring Game on Sunday, April 13.
The Flyers are also conducting a youth football clinic prior to the game on the same day. The clinic begins at 11 a.m. ET, followed by the Spring Game at 1 p.m. ET. Both events will take place at Welcome Stadium and both are free.
This year's honorary coaches for the Spring Game are Mark Herr and Phil Nussman, two stars from UD's 1984 team that went 10-0 in the regular season, only to lose 14-13 to the eventual national champion, Augustana in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Dayton averaged 35.6 points a game in the regular season that year, while allowing just 7.8 points a game. UD's defense was even more dominant at home allowing just 37 points in seven home games with four shutouts.
Herr, a two-year starter at defensive tackle, was the team's White-Allen Most Valuable Player. He was also a two-time winner of the Emil Karas Memorial Award for inspirational leadership. He was the first player in Dayton football history to earn the Karas award twice, and was also the first Flyer football player to be named the team MVP and Karas Award winner in the same season. He was also a Third Team Division III All-American as a senior.
Currently the Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Lucas County (Ohio), Mark and his wife Cheryl have three children. His oldest, Megan is a member of UD's women's soccer team.
Nussman took over as the starting quarterback in 1984 and guided the Flyer offense to at least three touchdowns in every regular season game. On the season, he completed 90 of 195 passes for 1,191 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also scored three rushing TD's. He was also named co-winner of the Lt. Andy Zulli Memorial Award, which is considered one of the most prestigious in the program.
Nussman is manager for DoD and Aerospace programs for Dayton-based O'Neil and Associates, Inc. Phil and his wife Lisa have two children. Their oldest, John, is a graduate assistant on the Purdue football coaching staff.
The Youth Clinic is open to first-graders through eighth-graders. Those who attend will receive valuable fundamental drill instruction, as well as the opportunity to interact with the players and meet the Flyer coaching staff. Two youngsters will be selected to serve as honorary team captains and will participate in the pre-game coin toss.
UD's 2014 team captains will also be announced at the coin toss.
