DAYTON MEN’S SOCCER DEFEATS AKRON, 2-1

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men's soccer team was victorious over Akron on Saturday by a score of 2-1.

The Flyers took an early 2-0 lead and held on to pick up their third win of the spring season. They defeated a talented Akron program that finished seventh in the nation in 2013 and won a national title just a few years ago in 2010.

In the 18th minute, UD's Rafael Gamboa whipped in a service from the right side to a waiting Amass Amankona, who was there to head it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Flyer advantage.

Dayton was able to score again in the 65th minute when the Flyers strung a series of passes together which resulted in right back Ben Emery pushing forward into Akron's defensive third of the field. He hit a cross over to James Haupt in the middle of the field where he struck a volley to the far post for the second goal of the game.

The Zips went to score just a single goal, but it wasn't enough as Dayton picked up the 2-1 victory.

Head coach Dennis Currier talked about Dayton's performance on both ends of the field.

"Defensively we did a great job disrupting any flow Akron tried to gain with their possession," said Currier. "Our relentless pressure created many turn overs and kept them off balance for most of the game. We maintained excellent shape during the 90 minutes. It was good to see some of the things we worked on in training this past week were executed in the game."

"Offensively, it was an exciting game to watch as both teams have a good dynamic attack," Currier added. "Fortunately, our offense had a little more purpose and accuracy in the final which created two goals and several other good looks. We pride ourselves on creating chances and scoring goals from the backs to the strikers and to be able to do that against a high quality team is a good sign."

The Flyers (3-0) will host the Dayton Dutch Lions for their only home game of the spring at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15.
