DAYTON CLAIMS TOP SEED FOR ATLANTIC 10 VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Flyers Look to Take Fifth Title in the Last Six Years

BROOKLYN, N.Y.— Dayton will be the top seed for the 2014 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship, which beings Friday at the Frericks Center on the UD campus, the Atlantic 10 announced Sunday.
 
The Flyers finished the regular season with a 13-1 conference record and a 26-5 overall mark. They earn a bye through Friday's first round and into Saturday's semifinals. Dayton, which has won four of the last five A-10 championships, enters the championship having won 19 of 20 regular season matches, including 10 straight.

Dayton captured their 11th regular season conference championship on their way to securing the top seed in the tournament. The Flyers are going for their ninth tournament title. They are led by junior Alaina Turner, who is averaging 4.14 kills/set. Setter Jane Emmenecker is leading the conference with 11.12 assists/set. The defense is bolstered by senior Isolde Hannan with 1.20 blocks/set and junior Janna Krafka, who is averaging 4.39 digs/set.
 
George Washington, the only team to beat the Flyers during the season, will be the number two seed and claim the other quarterfinal bye. The Colonials finished the regular season with an 11-3 league record and a 21-7 overall mark.
 
Saint Louis, Rhode Island, VCU and Duquesne all tied with a 9-5 conference record. SLU earns the third seed, having posted a 3-2 record against the other three tied teams. The Billikens are 20-9 overall and will face defending champion Duquesne in the quarterfinals. The Dukes were 16-11 overall during the regular season and are seeded sixth due to a 2-3 mark against the tied teams. The Saint Louis-Duquesne match will be played Friday at 7:00 pm with the winner advancing to face George Washington in the semifinals Saturday at 7:00 pm.
 
Rhode Island and VCU will meet in the early quarterfinal. Rhody (18-9 overall) is the fourth seed because of a head-to-head win over fifth-seeded VCU (16-12 overall). The matchup between the two Rams will be Friday at 4:30 pm with the winner advancing to face Dayton on Saturday at 4:30 pm.
 
The championship concludes with Sunday's final, which begins at 2:00 pm. The winner of the A-10 Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

All five matches of the championship will be streamed at no charge on the A-10 Network, available on Atlantic10.com and on the official A-10 app for iOS and Android devices.
