LAHAINA, Maui – Three Flyers reached career highs in points as Dayton defeated the Cal Golden Bears 84-62 in the 2013 EA Sports Maui Invitational third place game.
Devin Oliver had 21 points and seven rebounds,
Jalen Robinson netted 17 points and
Kyle Davis tallied 12 points. Oliver, Robinson and Davis all netted career scoring highs.
Oliver was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 15.7 points and 5.3 rebounds in the three games. He led UD in scoring, assists (10, with just one turnover) and steals (4). He shot .600 (15-25) from the floor, .625 (5-8) from beyond the arc, and .750 (12-16) from the line.
Oliver started a key 12-point run five minutes into the second half with a tip-in and a 3-pointer, then had a steal and drive that ended in a spinning layup. Less than a minute later, 6-foot freshman
Kyle Davis drove in from the top of the key in traffic for a two-handed dunk to give Dayton a 52-39 lead with less than 12 minutes left.
The win gave Dayton (6-1) its second big win this week and third place in the tournament. It beat No. 11 Gonzaga on Monday and lost by 1 to No. 18 Baylor on Tuesday. Cal (5-2 overall) placed in fourth.
The Flyers shot just under 52 percent in the second half after making less than half their shots in the first.
Vee Sanford added 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting as the Flyers scored 70 or more points for the fifth time this season. The Flyers played an up tempo game throughout as UD out-scored Cal 15-0 in fast break points.
Dayton took care of the ball with a season-low four turnovers and the Flyer bench came up big. UD's reserves out-scored Cal 52-8.
UD returns home to face the Delaware State Hornets on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Ohio.
