MEN'S TENNIS WRAPS UP PLAY AT LOUISVILLE INVITATIONAL

Oct. 16, 2005

UD men's tennis team finished play at the Louisville Invitational with three out of nine players surviving first round singles matches. Dayton failed to send a player to the third round, but James O'Connell, Brad Roby and Josh Vance reached the second round for the Flyers in their respective singles draws. O'Connell and partner Tom Murphy tallied up the only UD doubles win this weekend.

Roby led the way with an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory in round one of the B Singles draw over Steve Kellman of Southern Illinois. Roby was defeated in his second match 6-0, 4-6, 2-6 by St. Louis's Matt Gordon.

O'Connell moved on to round by default, and Vance had a first round bye for UD. O'Connell was eliminated by Tony Teufel of Louisville 4-6, 1-6 in round two, and Vance fell to Wright State's Tim Hershner 3-6, 4-6.

In the consolation draws, the Flyers sent four out of eight players to the second round. Freshman Antonio Rodriguez recorded his first victory of the season for UD with a 7-6(4), 7-6(5) defeat over Nick Tarvin of IUPUI in the C Singles consolation draw. However, nobody reached the third round of the backdraw for Dayton.

Murphy and O'Connell cruised to an 8-3 victory over Javier Saab and Ross Gehlhausen of IUPUI in round one of the A Doubles draw. They fell in the second round 2-8 to Louisville's Teufel and Stefan Naughton.

The Flyers return to action Saturday in Ann Arbor at the Omni Regional.
