ROB CHAPPELL EARNS MVP AWARD FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR

April 24, 2008

Head coach Drew Tyrer and the Dayton Flyers men's golf program honored its nine-member team at the annual team banquet on Wednesday.

Junior Rob Chappell earned the team's Most Valuable Player award for the third consecutive season. Chappell led the Flyers in stroke average in 2007-08 at 75.0 and total rounds with 22. Chappell has played his best golf of late with a pair of fourth place finishes in his last three tournaments.

Chappell, the 2006 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, is UD's first three-time MVP since 1993 graduate Davis Boland accomplished that feat in his freshman, junior and senior seasons.

The Coaches Award went to freshman Zach Glassman. Known as a tireless worker on-and-off the course, Glassman ranks second on the team in stroke average at 75.1 this season. He earned the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award in September and is tied for the team lead in total rounds at 22.

The four freshmen, Glassman, Jeff Hodapp, Chris Woeste and Ian Gilley each received a plaque with the Varsity `D'. Junior Matthew Friend completed his second season with the men's golf program and received a varsity jacket.

The rest of the junior class, Mitch Custenborder, Mark Juve, Nick Trubee and Chappell, all received a watch with the UD insignia.

Among the team highlights this season included two Rookie of the Week awards and a Player of the Week honor from the Atlantic 10 and four Top 10 finishes.

Dayton will head to the Kent State Invitational on Saturday, April 26. The event will take place at the Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna, Ohio. After that the Flyers conclude the 2007-08 campaign at the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship May 2-4.
