KETTERING, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's and women's cross country teams started their 2006 seasons on a positive note at their own Flyer 5K Challenge at Indian Riffle Park on a rainy Saturday morning. UD sophomore Mike Andersen won the men's race with a near record performance as the Flyer men finished second overall. Freshman Kristin Terry began her collegiate career with an 18th place effort for the Dayton women, which placed fourth.
Running in wet conditions and temperatures in the mid 60s, 2005 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Mike Andersen recorded the second fastest time by an individual champion in the meet's eight-year history. Andersen crossed the line in 15:21, which was just four seconds behind the meet record set by David Mitchell of Miami (Ohio) in 2004.
The Redhawks of Miami won their fourth consecutive team title at the Flyer 5K by taking places two through five individually. MU (25 team points) was followed by the host UD (85) in second, Northern Kentucky (90), Morehead State (109), IUPUI (117), Ohio Wesleyan (140), Xavier (146) and IPFW (209).
Dayton placed second in the team standings as a result of a tightly packed group of runners that finished less than a minute behind Andersen. Senior Eric Contreras was the second Flyer to cross the finish line in a time of 16:01 to place 18th. Sophomore Matt Peters (16:09), junior Dan Sammons (16:15) and senior David Berning (16:19) ranked 21st, 22nd and 23rd to close out the Dayton scorers.
Sophomore Tom Middleton (16:36) and senior Matt Danis (16:39) rounded out the Flyer seven as they displaced 20 runners from the opposition.
Also finishing for the Dayton men were Robby Strock (16:46), Tim Kaelin (16:51), Tony Holtvoigt (16:51), Brian Gilchrist (16:57), Matt Manning (17:02), Adam Miller (17:05), Derek Henderson (17:06), Brad Boyd (17:13), Mike Peters (17:24) and Michael Connolly (17:41).
Dayton's women were fourth as a team with a score of 115 behind IPFW (42), Miami (43) and Xavier (54). Northern Kentucky (133) finished fifth followed by Ohio Wesleyan (166), IUPUI (188) and Morehead State (208).
The Flyers had five runners place in the top 27 individually including Terry. Senior Dianne Streibel ran a time of 19:36 to place 20th for Dayton. She was followed by Jacqueline Jaworek (19:45), Bridget Conlon (19:47) and Ellen Nienhaus (19:48) in 24th, 26th and 27th place respectively.
Freshmen Alex Miles and Angela Conlon rounded out the top seven for UD's women. Miles finished in 28th place at 19:53 while Conlon was in 34th place at 20:08.
Also running for the Flyer women were Sydney Hubbard (20:11), Anne Oltman (20:11), Amy Kempf (20:18), Olivia Conlon (20:24), Emily Haas (20:40), Kate Tejkl (20:53), Emily Deet (21:02), Elizabeth Tucker (21:08), Amanda Tucker (21:25) and Allison Smith (22:50).
