NORTHERN IOWA BEATS DAYTON 74-67 TO WIN THE LAS VEGAS HOLIDAY CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP

LAS VEGAS (AP) -Ben Jacobson scored 21 points to lead Northern Iowa over Dayton 74-67 Friday night in the final round of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic.

Jacobson was 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the foul line with three steals.

Also for Northern Iowa, Erik Crawford scored 14 points, including 10-of-10 from the free-throw line, while Eric Coleman added 12 points. The Panthers won despite being out-rebounded 46-28.

The Panthers (10-1) are off to their best start since joining Division I in the 1981-82 season.

Brian Roberts led the Flyers (8-5) with 18 points and five rebounds. Monty Scott added 15 points and six rebounds, while Norman Plummer had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Flyers. It was Plummer's third double-double in the tournament's four games. Freshman Desmond Adedeji came off the bench for 10 points (4-4 FT) and a career-high six rebounds.

Roberts and Plummer were Dayton's representatives on the all-tournament team.

The Panthers jumped to an 11-2 lead to start the game, but slowly the Flyers chipped away at the lead. Dayton cut the advantage to three twice in the half and trailed at halftime, 32-29.

After leading 32-29 at halftime, the Panthers expanded the lead to 44-32 with 14:58 to go. The Flyers responded with a 12-3 run, but never came closer. In the final 34 seconds, the Panthers were 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.

For the game, Northern Iowa made 22-of-31 (71 percent) from the free-throw line, while Dayton was 12-of-13 (92 percent).

After a short break for the Christmas holiday, the Flyers will return home to face Vanderbilt Friday, December 30. Game time is 7:00 p.m. ES
