The University of Dayton has announced that Michael Bewley has been named basketball strength and conditioning coach. Bewley replaces Daniel Shapiro, was named the head strength and conditioning coach of the Sacramento Kings in August.

Bewley, 29, comes to UD from Georgia Southern University, where has been assistant strength and conditioning coach since 2002. He developed and implemented conditioning programs for basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball, and assisted with Georgia Southern's 11 other sports.

He also has worked as a Sports Performance Nutritionist at Georgia Southern, and with the Team Savannah USA Olympic Weightlifting team.

"Michael's coaching style and his extensive experience with basketball made him a great fit," Joe Owens, UD's Associate Director of Athletics and Director of Performance Enhancement, said. "He has a strong background in nutrition, which will be a plus for our student-athletes as they develop themselves into championship form."

Bewley graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1998 with a major in Physical Education. He then moved on to the University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada, where is was a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach and the school's sports nutritionist. He earned his master's in Education Leadership from Nevada in 2002.

"I'm honored and excited to be named the strength and conditioning coach for basketball at UD," Bewley said. "Dayton basketball has a far-reaching reputation for excellence and I really look forward to working with our coaches, staff and athletes as we continue to build on the success of our basketball program."

The native of Louisville, Kentucky is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a USA Weightlifting Level I Olympic Club Coach and a Certified Sports Performance Nutritionist. He begins his duties at UD on Monday.
