DAYTON, OH -- - The University of Dayton men's basketball team held off the Saint Joseph's Hawks Wednesday night at UD Arena, 58-54, behind a career-high tying 17 points from Warren Williams. Dayton improves to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's falls to 7-7 and 4-1 in the A-10.

Williams also added four assists while junior forward Monty Scott chipped in nine points. Scott, Norman Plummer and Chris Alvarez each had five rebounds which tied for the lead for UD. Despite not having a player with more than five, Dayton out-rebounded the Hawks 32-31.

Saint Joseph's had won 21-straight Atlantic 10 regular season games. SJU falls to 20-2 in their last 22 games versus A-10 opponents (including the conference post-season), with both losses coming at UD Arena.

Chet Stachitas led Saint Joseph's with 18 points while Dwayne Jones had 11 rebounds and six blocked shots for the Hawks. John Bryant came off the bench for SJU to block three shots.

The Flyers knocked down their first three attempts from behind the three-point arc, taking a 15-10 lead. But the Hawks answered with an 8-2 run over the next three minutes.

Scott rolled it in off the finger-tips for a 19-18 lead and an inside deuce by James Cripe put UD back up three. After SJU tied it at 21-21, Brian Roberts connected on a three-ball from the corner. But back-to-back threes from the Hawks' Pat Carroll put Saint Joseph's up 27-24 with 1:20 to go before the half.

After Bryant's offensive put-back put SJU up 29-24, Alvarez tipped in an offensive rebound to cut it to a 29-26 Hawks' lead at the half. Scott led UD at the half with 11, while Williams added eight. Stachitas had 11 for the Hawks at the break.

In the second, Williams opened the scoring before a 7-0 SJU run prompted Coach Brian Gregory to call timeout. The Flyers went over six minutes between field goals before a hook from Alvarez cut the Hawks' lead to 39-33 with 12:24 remaining. Jimmy Binnie's three pulled UD within three, putting the 12,506 fans on their feet.

Dwayne Lee answered with a three, but Williams came right back with one of his own as the game moved under the 10 minute mark with SJU up 42-39.

Norman Plummer ripped away a rebound and then buried a three that gave UD a 45-44 lead before the Hawks answered. A three from Marques Bennett put UD back on top 50-49 with 4:57 remaining.

Cripe hit both ends of a one-and-one as UD took a 54-49 lead. After a free throw and a three from Lee made it a one-point game, Mark Jones hit a runner in the lane to put UD back up 56-53 with 1:35 to go.

Saint Joseph's held off UD's next possession with a disputed shot-clock violation, but Alvarez put a hand in front of Stachitas' three-attempt with 14.6 remaining and the shot fell out-of-bounds.

Lee hit one free-throw to cut the lead to two, but UD broke the press and a lay-in from Plummer sealed the win.

The Flyers host La Salle at UD Arena on Saturday in an 8:00 p.m. tip-off. The game will air on WHIO TV in Dayton. Live statistics will be available on DaytonFlyers.com. Following the La Salle contest, the Flyers play five of their next six games on the road.
