A comeback from five runs down went for naught Saturday, as the University of Dayton baseball team fell 9-5 in 12 innings to Canisius Saturday at Woerner Field.

Both Dayton errors in the game proved costly, leading to a pair of four-run innings in the second and 12th innings.  Only three of the nine Golden Griffin runs were earned.

Brian Blasik, Bobby Glover, A.J. Ryan, Jared Broughton and Robby Sunderman all had two hits for Dayton, with Sunderman hitting his first home run of the year.

Canisius led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, when the Flyers finally dented the plate with two runs.  UD added a run in the seventh, eighth and tied it in the ninth when Ryan singled home Glover.

Neither team threatened in the 10th or 11th innings, but Canisius took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Drew Petit.  After an error extended the inning, Connor Panas’ double pushed the Golden Griffin lead to four.  Dayton was able to get two aboard in the bottom of the 12th, but stranded both to give the Flyers 13 runners left on base for the game.

Junior Kyle Coenen’s first decision in a Dayton uniform is a loss, despite striking out five and allowing just two hits and one earned run on 5.1 innings.  Canisius freshman Devon Stewart went the first eight innings, but Jon Fitzsimmons got the win in four innings of relief.

Dayton, 5-11 on the season, returns to the diamond on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday.  UD will host a rematch with Canisius in the first game, and then will take on Oakland at 3 p.m. ET.
