Dayton Flyers

NEW YORK – University of Dayton sophomore left-handed pitcher Cameron Hobson and senior Cole Tyrell became the 10th and 11th Flyers to be selected by a Major League Baseball franchise. The duo was selected on Wednesday in the final day of the MLB Draft.

Hobson, a Crawfordsville, Ind. native, was selected in the 37th round of the draft by the New York Yankees. Although he is a sophomore, Hobson was eligible because he is 21. He was the 2009 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, and tallied a then-program-best 83 strikeouts in a single-season in his rookie campaign. This season, Hobson threw three complete games and had 68 strikeouts for UD. He has a 4.58 ERA and an 11-6 overall record in two years at Dayton.

Tyrell, from Minooka, Ill., was selected in the 42nd round by the San Diego Padres. He finished his career with 182 consecutive starts, the second-most in the nation. He was second on the team with a .326 average and 49 RBI. He also tied for second with 18 doubles and 10 home runs.

UD Head coach Tony Vittorio has had 11 total players drafted in his career. It is the second time that Vittorio has had two players drafted in the same season. His previous draftees include Craig Stammen and Jerry Blevins, who have each seen major league action for the Washington Nationals and Oakland A's respectively.

The Flyers finished the 2010 season at 23-32 and 12-15 in the Atlantic 10. UD graduates seven seniors this year. In addition, 19 returners will play in a sanctioned collegiate wood bat league this summer, the most in program history.
