DAYTON, Ohio – Mel Skochdopole hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to give Dayton a 6-3 win over St. Bonaventure to open Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Flyers lost game two of the doubleheader, 13-6.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and Flyers down one run, 3-2, Skochdopole did what every kid dreams about -- hit a walk-off grand slam to give his team the victory.
“It is something you dream about since you’re a little kid,” the sophomore infielder said. “I was nervous and had to take a deep breath to try and stay confident. It was awesome -- one of the best sports moments that I have ever been apart of.”
Preceding Skochdopole’s first homerun of the season were three walks drawn by Brian Blasik, C.J. Gillman and a pinch-hitting Joe Gayda to load the bases with two outs. Skochdopole took a first-pitch curveball for a strike and then sent the second pitch from reliever (and starting second baseman) Jason Radwan (1-2) sailing over the left field fence to give Dayton the 6-3 win.
It was sophomore left-haned pitcher Tommy Konrad (3-1) who earned the win after retiring one batter in relief. Senior right-handed pitcher Mike Hauschild laid the groundwork during his fifth start of the season. Hauschild struck out six and allowed no walks through through 8 ⅔ innings pitched -- including seven consecutive scoreless innings. The Bonnies scored two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game before Hauschild was relieved by Konrad.
“Every time Mike (Hauschild) has pitched this year he has given us a chance to win,” Head Coach Tony Vittorio said. “It is pretty simple to play defense behind him because he pounds the zone. A lot of pitchers would learn a lot from the way he is pitching right now.”
Outside of St. Bonaventure’s two-run ninth inning, sophomore Robby Sunderman would have driven in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning for the Flyers. Sunderman hit a two-out single with runners at the corners to drive in the first run from either team since the first innings and put UD on top, 2-1.
Senior centerfielder Bobby Glover extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a 2-for-4 outing. His season-long streak would come to an end after five trips to the plate in game two of the double header.
St. Bonaventure first baseman Austin Ingraham went 3-for-4 in the first game.
Game Two
The Flyers gave up 21 hits and 13 runs to the Bonnies in game two of the doubleheader to lose, 13-6.
Jordan Crane (2-0) pitched a complete-game on the mound to earn the win, striking out four and allowing six runs on 11 hits. Burny Mitchem (1-3) gave up seven runs in 3 ⅔ innings pitched to receive the loss.
Sophomore Ryan Berry went 2-for-2 -- a double and a triple -- with two runs scored and two RBI after subbing in the designated hitter spot in the seventh inning. Berry’s three hits on the season to date are a double, triple and homerun. Sunderman went 3-for-4 in game two.
Series Finale
Dayton and St. Bonaventure conclude the conference-opening three-game series on Sunday at noon at Time Warner Cable Stadium.
