CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – With five runs in the ninth inning, Dayton baseball came back to defeat Northern Illinois, 13-9, on Sunday afternoon in the Riverview Inn Challenge at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Junior Ian Hundley finished the day 4-for-4 at the plate and ended the weekend reaching base on 14-of-15 plate appearances. Senior Brian Blasik went 3-for-4 on Sunday with three RBI and one run scored. Sophomore Mel Skochdopole stole three bases and recorded three RBI on two hits.
Down one run going into the ninth inning, the Flyers scored three runs to take the go-ahead lead. Catcher Kuris Duggan was the first to reach base in the ninth on a one-out single up the middle. Duggan was replaced by pinch runner Spencer Rohr. Rohr advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hundley singled to put runners at the corners after laying down a perfect bunt down the third base line. That set up a double from Blasik to tie the game at nine – scoring Rohr and advancing Hundley to third.
C.J. Gillman gave Dayton the go-ahead lead with an RBI-single to center field – his first RBI of the weekend after leaving the bases loaded in two at-bats on Sunday. A.J. Ryan, Mel Skochdopole and Jared Broughton drove in insurance runs to pad the Flyers’ lead to 13-9. Dayton batted through the order to score the most runs in a ninth inning since April 2, 2010 at Temple – a 25-11 Flyer win.
Junior right-handed pitcher Bryce Lahrman closed the door on the Huskies in the bottom of the ninth with one strikeout through four batters faced. Sophomore Tommy Konrad (1-0) earned his first win of the season on the mound after pitching 4 1/3 innings of relief with one strikeout and four hits.
Senior Bobby Glover finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to a season-long 13 games.
The Flyers (4-9) stole a season-high nine bases. UD won two-of-three games in the Riverview Inn Challenge.
Northern Illinois (2-12) scored eight of their nine runs in the fourth inning and hit three homeruns on Sunday. Two of those homeruns came from first baseman Jeff Zimmerman – his only hits of the day.
The Flyers will play Bowling Green State for the second time this season on Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET in Bowling Green, Ohio. On Wednesday Dayton host Toledo at Athletes in Action Stadium (Xenia, Ohio) in the first of a 13-game home stand.
