HIGH POINT, N.C. – HIGH POINT, N.C. – University of Dayton baseball its lost third one-run game of the season on Sunday afternoon against High Point at Williard Stadium, 4-3.
Freshman A.J. Ryan started for the first time as a Flyer at first base and finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Ryan hit .556 (5-for-9) with five RBI during the High Point series.
The Panthers (6-2) came back to score three runs in the sixth inning to take the go-ahead 4-3 lead.
Dayton (1-4) drew first blood on offense as Ryan drove in the first run of the game in the third inning on a single to left field. The La Grange Park, Ill., native was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double which ended the inning but allowed senior Bobby Glover to score. Glover reached on a single.
High Point scored one run to tie the game in the fourth inning, but starting pitcher Kyle Coenen and the Flyer defense kept the damage at a minimum by leaving three Panthers stranded on base to end the inning.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, senior C.J. Gillman used a sacrifice fly to score Hundley from third. Ryan followed with a single to centerfield which drove in another run and gave UD a 3-1. Gillman went 0-for-3 on the day to see his eight-game hitting streak come to an end.
Coenen’s career first start as a Flyer came to an end after 5 1/3 innings with two runners on base in the sixth inning. He was relieved by junior right-handed pitcher Parker Schrage (0-2) – the two pitchers were also teammates at Madison College last season before transferring to UD. The Panthers ended up taking the lead in the seventh with three runs scored. Schrage received the loss after allowing the unearned go-ahead run.
In the ninth inning, freshman Spencer Rohr pinch hit to lead off but a strikeout and a groundout into a double play helped High Point’s Jamie Schultz earn his third save of the season. Panther reliever Joe Goodman (1-0) received the win after pitching 2 1/3 shutout innings with two strikeouts.
The Flyers will open the 2012 home schedule on Tuesday, hosting Bowling Green State at Time Warner Cable Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
