AMHERST, Mass. – University of Dayton baseball lost to Massachusetts, 9-5, on Friday evening at Earl Lorden Field.

The Flyers fall to 14-16 and 2-2 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. UMass opened its home schedule on Friday to improve to 9-12 and 3-1 in the A-10.

Dayton starting pitcher Cameron Hobson (4-3) had been dominant in his first seven starts of the season, entering Friday with a conference-best 59 strikeouts and having thrown just one walk in the last 21 2/3 innings pitched. But similar to last year when Hobson allowed 13 runs against UMass at Time Warner Cable Stadium, the Minutemen had Hobson’s number. The lefty from Crawfordsville, Ind., gave up nine runs on a career-high 16 hits while inching closer to Dayton’s career strikeout record with four in 5 1/3 innings.

Hobson is now five strikeouts away from Dayton’s all-time record of 218, currently held by Luke Trubee (2003-06). Freshman reliever and fellow lefty Tommy Konrad allowed just one hit in 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief of Hobson.

Junior C.J. Gillman hit his first homerun as a Flyer on a solo shot in the seventh inning. Gillman finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. The Littleton, Colo., native made his first start at first base after starting all of Dayton’s 29 prior games at third base.

Dayton’s 8- and 9-spot hitters, Jimmy Roesinger and Bobby Glover, both recorded two hits on Friday. Roesinger went 2-for-4 with one run scored, while Glover 2-for-3 with one RBI. Glover now has a seven-game hitting streak.

UMass had two players with four hits on Friday while outhitting the Flyers, 17-9. Peter Copa went 4-for-4 with two RBI, while Kyle Multner finished 4-for-5 with two RBI. It is the fourth time this season that Dayton has allowed 15 or more hits.

UMass starter Glen Misho (4-1) threw six innings with four strikeouts and allowing five walks and four runs to earn the win.

The three-game series continues tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET, and on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET.
