AMBLER, PA - Dayton exploded for 11 runs in the final five innings of play to take the finale of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader Saturday against Temple, 11-2. With the win, UD improved to 29-22 overall and 11-12 in A-10 play heading into Sunday's series finale with TU at 1 p.m. ET.
A solo homer by Shawn Gizynski in the fourth inning and a two-run blast from Marshall MacDonald in the fifth got the Flyer offense going in a game that saw them tally 15 hits. Gizynski led the charge with a 3-for-5 performance that also included a double, two runs scored and two RBI.
Scott Dunwoody added a 3-for-5 effort of his own with two runs scored and two RBI to join a group of five different Flyer to tally multiple RBI including MacDonald, Cole Tyrell and Myles Swartzel.
Tyrell has now hit safely in 16 of the last 17 games by going 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI while Swartzel finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Southpaw Quinn Haselhorst posted his second straight complete-game performance allowing only one earned run on eight hits while striking out two and walking only one. He improved to 5-2 on the season with the victory.
Temple went ahead early with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, but Dayton responded with a one-out solo homer to right centerfield by Shawn Gizynski to pull within one at 2-1.
Scott Dunwoody then ledoff the sixth inning with a single to right field followed by a homer from Marshall MacDonald to right field on a 2-0 pitch to take a 3-2 lead.
UD put the game out of reach with another rally in the seventh inning that began with a one-out single to right field by Shawn Gizynski. Jacob Spaeth and Kevin Miller then drew back-to-back walks that loaded the bases for Scott Dunwoody. The Flyer catcher responded by hitting a single down the left field line to plate two runs. After a pitching change, Marshall MacDonald walked on five pitched to load the bases again with one out. Cole Tyrell sent in one more run on a RBI groundball to second base to put the Flyers on top 6-2.
Dayton added five more runs in the ninth with a rally that started on a leadoff double to right centerfield by Kevin Miller. Scott Dunwoody followed with a single through the right side of the infield that pushed Miller to third base. After a strike out, Cole Tyrell ripped a RBI single down the left field line to send in Miller and move Dunwoody to second. After an Owl pitching change, Jake Hoover singled to left field and load the bases for Ryan Nevill who collected an RBI on a groundball to second base. Then with runners on second and third and two outs, Myles Swartzel ripped a base hit to left field that plated both runners. Swartzel advanced to second on a throw to the plate and moved up to third on a wild pitch, which put him into position to score easily on a double to right field by Shawn Gizynski that closed out the scoring in an 11-2 victory for Dayton.
