RICHMOND, Va. - After 42 combined runs in the opener on Friday, Luke Trubee led Dayton past Richmond, 8-2 on Saturday with a complete-game performance. The Flyers (15-12, 5-3 A-10) have now won five straight games entering the series finale with the Spiders (10-19, 3-5 A-10) on Sunday at Noon ET.
Senior Luke Trubee improved to 3-4 on the year in the complete-game victory. The righthander struck out two batters while scattering eight hits in his 14th career complete game. Trubee now has the third most strikeouts (174) and third most innings pitched (253.1) in UD career history. He made his 36th career start on Saturday, which is tied for the fourth most ever by a Flyer pitcher.
Bryan Chandler finished 2-for-3 with a triple, home run, two runs scored and two RBI to lead a group of three Flyers to record multi-RBI days.
William Benoit was 2-for-5 with a stolen base, run scored and two RBI while Roberto Ramos went 1-for-3 with a stolen base, run scored and two RBI of his own for the Flyers who won their seventh straight game over the Spiders.
Dayton opened the scoring in the first following a leadoff walk by Massa. McSoley followed with a hard groundball to the left side of the infield. The Spider shortstop knocked the ball down, but could not record an out and UD had runners on first and second with no outs. With the Flyers threatening for a big inning, Richmond turned a double play off a sacrifice bunt attempt that also eliminated McSoley at first base. However, the Flyers came back with an RBI triple off the bottom of the wall in right centerfield for a 1-0 lead after scoring in their ninth consecutive inning against the Spiders.
Richmond evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single to left by Ben Zeskind. The score would remain tied until the top of the fifth when Dayton took another one-run lead. Ramos drew a walk to leadoff the frame and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Burt then ripped a single through the left side to put runners on the corners with no outs. Kevin Miller laid down a sacrifice bunt to the left side of the infield, which moved Burt up to second base. Massa then sent home Ramos with an RBI groundout to short for a 2-1 Flyer lead at the game's midpoint.
UD added another run in the sixth inning off a solo home run to right field by Chandler. The outfielder's first home run of the season gave Dayton a 3-1 advantage.
The Spiders got one back in the bottom of the sixth after Zeskind singled and scored on a one-out double to right centerfield from Joe Mahoney. Trubee then retired the next two batters in order to maintain a 3-2 Dayton lead.
Dayton gave itself a cushion in the eighth inning with a five-run rally on four hits. UD loaded the bases to begin the inning after single from McSoley, a double by Schumm and an intentional walk of Chandler. Then after a UD pitching change, Benoit ripped a ground ball through the right side of a drawn-in infield. McSoley and Schumm scored on the play as Chandler moved up to second base. Rohren laid down a bunt in the next at bat and the Spider catcher attempted to throw out Chandler heading toward third base. However, the throw ended up in left field and Chandler scored the third run of the inning. Ramos followed with a two-RBI single for an 8-2 Flyer lead. |
