Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Director of UD Arena

Tim O'Connell was promoted to his current position in July 1998. Prior to that, he served as Business Manager for Intercollegiate Athletics & Manager of the University of Dayton Arena upon joining the University in January, 1995.

O'Connell is responsible for the oversight of the U.D. Arena, Frericks Center, Athletics Practice Facility, Baujan & NCR Soccer Fields, and the Arena Sports Complex. Beginning with the addition of the Donoher Basketball Center to the U.D. Arena in 1997-98, O'Connell has served as the project manager for all of the major Athletics' construction and renovation projects, which have totaled in excess of $25 million. This includes the U.D. Arena, Arena Administrative Suite, Arena Parking Lot Complex, Time Warner Cable Stadium, Jerry Von Mohr Football Practice Field, softball field, and Athletics Practice Facility projects.

He also was the University's project liaison during the Courtyard by the Marriott at the University of Dayton construction and continues as the business liaison with that Concord Hospitality/University of Dayton co-owned property.

In addition to his regular responsibilities, O'Connell has served as Tournament Manager for all the Division's post-season basketball tournaments since 1998, and is scheduled to continue in the role through 2010. At which time, he will have coordinated over 60 NCAA, NIT, and A-10 basketball tournament games. Due to his expertise in this area, Tim is annually asked by the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship staff to be part of a peer panel that assists new tournament managers.

O'Connell currently serves as the co-vice chairperson for the University's Emergency Management Steering Committee, is the past chair the institution's Public Safety Advisory Committee, and has sat on the Visitors and Facilities Committees. He was also a member of the NCAA Certification Fiscal Integrity Committee in 1995-96 and again in 2005-06. Tim currently serves as one of two grievance officers for the University and teaches the Life Skills course for the 1st year Student Athletes. He is a graduate of the first Leadership UD cohort, a program designed to identify and develop up and coming leaders within the University of Dayton's faculty and administration.

In 2007, Tim was awarded the distinguished Certified Facility Executive (CFE) designation from the International Association of Assembly Managers (IAAM), after successfully completing an extensive testing process. He currently serves on the oversight board for that certification process. Additionally, he is a board member of the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Director's (NACDA) facility and event operations association (CEFMA).

O'Connell came to the University from the Cincinnati Reds, where had been for almost 12 years before leaving. During the majority of his time with the Reds, he served as Director of Stadium Operations (1986 - 1994), coordinating the facility operations for close to 700 Major League Baseball games, including the 1990 National League Playoffs and World Series and the 1988 All-Star Game.

O'Connell attended the University of Cincinnati, majoring in Criminal Justice, a field that he continues to be involved in, on a part-time basis, with a suburban Cincinnati law enforcement agency. Tim, his wife Jackie, daughter Cassandra, and son Brennan reside in Cincinnati.
