A LOOK BACK AT A YEAR IN UD ATHLETICS
Dec. 31, 2006 DaytonFlyers.com reviews 2006 with the memorable stories that defined the year. From thrilling victories, milestones and honors, here's a look back at the previous year with the Dayton Flyers. December 29, 2006 - A Grand Performance for Strong Senior Jennifer Strong became the 16th member of the 1,000 Point Club at UD with a career-high 24 points against Boston University during the opening round of the Blue Sky Classic in Hanover, N.H.. She is the first Flyer to reach the 1,000 point plateau since Stephanie Miller who finished with 1,254 points from 1999-04. Entering the 2007 calendar year, Strong ranks 15th all-time in scoring at Dayton with 1,013 career points and is just 86 points shy of surpassing Leah Alba (1,099; 1981-85) at 14th place on the all-time list. December 13, 2006 - Barhorst Earns Third Straight All-America Honor Senior Faye Barhorst earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors for the third consecutive year in a release of the teams by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Barhorst was also named an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American each of the last two seasons while earning AVCA Regional Freshman of the Year honors in 2003. A two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, Barhorst is UD's all-time leader in hitting percentage (.384), kills (1,796) and blocks (668). She ranked fourth nationally in hitting percentage this season at .431. Barhorst was also named to the A-10 All-Championship Team in each of the last three seasons. December 6, 2006 - Flyers Cruise Past Blue Jays This was the game that put the Flyers men's basketball team in the national spotlight on its own home court. Before a nationally televised audience, Monty Scott tallied 13 points and six rebounds, including a crucial three-pointer with 1:14 left, to help the Flyers outlast the Creighton Blue Jays 60-54 at UD Arena. Norman Plummer scored 13 points including a dunk with five seconds left to cap a 10-4 run in the last 3:43 of the game, giving Dayton its fifth win of the season at UD Arena. Brian Roberts was the only other Flyer in double-figures with 11 points, all in the first half, while going 3-for-3 from behind the arc and dishing out five assists. December 3, 2006 - UD Sets Three School Records The University of Dayton women's track and field team opened up their indoor season recording new school records in the high jump, pole vault, and 300m run. Sophomore Amy Kremer leapt to a new height in the high jump at 5-08.00 for fourth place overall at the meet, recording a new school record along the way. Kremer held the previous UD record in the high jump at 5-07.75. Junior Megan Sweeney also competed in the event jumping 5-06.00 for eighth place. Her jump places her among the Top 5 jumps in school history and was her career best. Rounding out the record holders, sophomore Stacy Chew ran a strong 300m finishing the event in 42.61. She placed third overall in the event and now holds the school record. The previous record time for the 300m was 42.64. December 1, 2006 - UD Live Video Streams Home Game for Free Capitalizing on its success on the court with men's and women's basketball, the Dayton Flyers announced a new feature with free live video streamed broadcasts of games at UD Arena. The launch of Dayton All-Access gives fans access to Flyer basketball games at UD Arena for free. November 30, 2006 - Cramer Named Academic All-American University of Dayton junior safety Brandon Cramer was named to the First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team. Cramer, a 2004 graduate of Anthony Wayne High School, was named to the second team last year as a sophomore. After missing the season opener with a knee injury, Cramer started the remaining nine games for the Flyers this season. He was third on the team in tackles for the second straight season (52). He led UD interceptions (3, tied) and fumbles recovered (1, tied) and was second on the team in passes broken up (3). He returned an interception 84 yards for what proved to be the game-winning points against Austin Peay. Cramer was the only Pioneer Football League student-athlete to be named First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America this year. He has a 4.0 GPA in Bio-Chemistry and Pre-Med. November 24, 2006 - Flyers Shuffle Past The Cards, 68-64 The Flyer duo of Brian Roberts and Charles Little dealt Dayton a 68-64 victory over Louisville at U.S. Bank Arena. In an intense finish, Brian Roberts dropped 20 points including a key three-pointer with 3:11 left in the game to lift the Flyers to a four-point win over the Cardinals. Little added 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field including nine points in the second half as Dayton won for just the fourth time in 14 games at U.S Bank Arena. Down 57-54 with 3:11 left in the game, Roberts stared Louisville's Juan Palacios straight in the eye at the top of the key. After two head flinches, Roberts pulled up and hit a three in Palacio's face with 3:08 left to tie the game at 57 all, ending a 12-7 run by the Cardinals. November 18, 2006 - Flyers Make Fourth Straight Trip To A-10 Championship Match Top-seeded Dayton earned a chance to play for its fourth-straight Atlantic 10 Championship with a 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-21) sweep of fourth-seeded Xavier in the Semifinals of the 25th Annual A-10 Volleyball Championship at Frericks Center. The Flyers lost to Saint Louis the following day and closed out the season with a 22-11 overall record. UD was led by A-10 Second Team pick Robynne Green who hit .545 with 13 kills and five blocks. She was one of three Flyers to reach double figures in kills. A-10 Player of the Year Faye Barhorst and A-10 First Team selection Jamie-Lee Richards had 12 kills. Barhorst added three blocks while Richards had four service aces and seven digs as Dayton won its seventh consecutive match in A-10 Tournament play. Redshirt sophomore Erin Schroeder, the A-10 Setter of the Year, dished out 37 assists to go along with eight digs, three blocks and two service aces for the Flyers. November 11, 2006 - Strongest Finish in 26 Years The Flyers men's cross country team posted their best finish in 26 years at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Led by sophomore Mike Andersen, UD finished 19th among 31 teams. Andersen, a three-time A-10 Performer of the Week honoree this year, crossed the finish line at 31:59 in 30th place at the 10-kilometer event held on Bowling Green State University's campus. Fellow teammate Eric Contreras was next to follow for the Flyers finishing in the 123rd spot in a time of 34:07. The senior, was named the A-10 Student Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row, placed second in every meet this year for the Flyers. November 10, 2006 - Dayton Athletics Rates High In Graduating Student-Athletes Dayton was listed as one of the nation's leaders in the 2006 NCAA Division I Graduation Rates Report. The Flyers' GSR is 96, up two points from last year and 18th out of 320 schools Division I school rated. UD's 91 percent graduation rate for its men's basketball program is best in the A-10. Men's basketball was one of 15 (out of 17) Flyer athletic teams with GSR's of 90 or better. Last year's report also noted that every one of the 229 scholarship student-athletes who entered UD from 1988-89 to 1997-98 and completed their eligibility at UD graduated. November 1, 2006 - Young Flyers Garner A-10 Awards University of Dayton women's soccer teammates Mandi Bäck and Kristen Persichini were named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team in voting conducted among the Conference's head coaches. The Flyers also placed a conference-leading three players on the All-Rookie team. Bäck was named to the All-Rookie team along with Colleen Gibson and Caitlin Proffitt. Sophomore Amanda Gallow was named to the Academic All-Conference team. UD finished the 2006 campaign 8-7-3 overall. October 10, 2006 - Miles Named Rookie of the Week University of Dayton women's cross country freshman Alex Miles was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after leading the Flyers at the All-Ohio Championship Race. The underclassman posted a time of 19.41.9 at the meet placing 48th overall and helped lead her team to a 14th place finish. The Fairview, Ohio native also recorded her season best time at the meet. It was the only individual Atlantic 10 honor the women's cross country team earned in 2006. September 4, 2006 - Currier Nets Win No. 200 Three second half goals, including a pair by Caleb Lindemann, led Dayton past Belmont, 3-0. The victory was not only the first of the season for the Flyers, but Head Coach Dennis Currier's 200th career victory. Lindemann's second career two-goal performance broke a string of three straight shutouts to begin the season against the Flyers. Also scoring for UD was Tyler Imbrogno, while Antti Arst and Ryan Hefley picked up one assist each. June 8, 2006 - Pohlman Awarded Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship University of Dayton Track & Field performer Kelly Pohlman was awarded an Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship, one of just four handed out by the conference. The six-time Atlantic 10 Shot Put Champion was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team and to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team. The Most Outstanding Field Performer of the 2006 A-10 Indoor Championship, Pohlman graduated with a 3.79 GPA in Psychology. On the field, she was a two-time A-10 Weight Throw Champion. Three of her A-10 shot put titles have come in Indoor, three in Outdoor. This past season, she finished third in A-10 in discus and hammer in outdoor. She is also the UD school record holder in the hammer throw and the weight throw. June 7, 2006 - Trubee Selected in MLB Draft Former University of Dayton right handed pitcher Luke Trubee was selected by the New York Yankees in Round 33 of the 2006 MLB Draft. Trubee was pick 1004 of this year's draft and the third Flyer pitcher selected in the past three years. Trubee joined the Yankees organization for mini camp in Tampa, Fla. before reporting to play for the Staten Island Yankees of the Single-A Short Season New York-Penn League. Trubee was an Atlantic 10 Honorable Mention All-Conference selection this past season after finishing 9-6 with a 3.95 ERA. He matched his own school record with 82 strikeouts this season in 107.0 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .273 batting average against him. Trubee also earned a spot on the A-10 All-Championship team after recording a complete-game shutout with six strikeouts in a win over George Washington. May 23, 2006 - Four Flyer Rowers Named CRSA National Scholar-Athletes The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced its list of National Scholar- Athletes, and four members of the University of Dayton rowing team are among the 135 student-athletes who were honored. Senior Addie Patterson, and juniors Allie Bogenschutz, Betsy Fulnecky and Kate Sanders were selected. All four row on UD's Varsity 8 boat. Four Flyer rowers named to CRCA Scholar-Athlete squad matches the most in school history (UD also had four in 2003). The CRCA National Scholar-Athlete award recognizes upper-class student-athletes with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher that competed in 75 percent of their team's 2006 spring races. May 13, 2006 - Lucky Number Seven Visiting Dayton rode a seven-run outburst in the fourth inning in an 8-6 win over Fordham. With the victory, UD clinched a berth in the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championships, the second straight for the Flyers and fourth in school history. Bryan Chandler provided the big offense for the Flyers with a two-RBI triple down the left field line in the fourth inning rally. Chandler finished 2-for-5 and scored twice. Galen Schumm went 3-for-5 with a run scored as Dayton out hit Fordham 12-8 on the afternoon. The offense provided plenty of support for UD starter Luke Trubee who hurled his fifth complete game of the season. May 7, 2006 - Flyers Have Best Ever Finish at A-10 Track & Field Championships The Dayton track & field team earned its highest-ever finish at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship Sunday, coming in fourth place. Kelly Pohlman won her third-straight A-10 shot put title and Amy Kremer was named Rookie of the Year after winning the high jump and heptathlon. May 6, 2006 - Flyers Earn Senior Day Split The UD softball team won its final game of the 2006 season with a 2-1 win in game two to split a doubleheader with Saint Louis Billikens. Senior pitcher Melissa Myher struck out 11 batters in two games to finish her career with 408 strikeouts, second all-time at UD. After trailing 1-0 in the first inning, the Flyers got on the board with an RBI single from Laura Matthews to tie the game. UD went ahead 2-1 in the sixth inning after Mollie Schrank scored on a wild pitch. That was enough for Myher who allowed one earned run in seven innings of work. April 22, 2006 - Advancing in the A-10 The Dayton women's tennis team wrapped up a 4-1 victory over the Rhode Island Rams in its second Atlantic 10 Championship match of the weekend. The Flyers, seeded No. 10, defeated No. 11 URI behind strong showings from junior Kate Mellion and freshman Carrie Trigilio. Although the Flyers would be eliminated the following day, a young UD squad finished the 2005-06 regular season campaign with a 9-10 overall dual record (5-2 at home) and took tenth place at the Championships. April 21, 2006 - Back to the Future The Dayton Flyers dipped back in their storied past when Drew Tyrer was named the men's golf head coach and Assistant to External Affairs for the UD Athletic Department. His collegiate career took him to the University of Dayton, where he was a four-year letterman and three-time captain of the golf team. He tied the course record with a 64 (-6) on the North Course at NCR Country Club in Dayton during his freshman season. He competed in 46 collegiate tournaments totaling over 130 rounds of golf during his career. Tyrer also excelled in the classroom while at UD, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management with a minor in journalism in 2004. He was a three-time Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll Recipient and was also the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board for the 2003-04 academic year. April 16, 2006 - Dayton Finishes Eighth at CAA Championships The junior duo of Melissa Gaus and Lindsey Grueter led Dayton to an eighth place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship at Pinehurst #6. Gaus placed 22nd while Grueter tied for 29 place individually. Both Flyer juniors carded their best rounds of the three-day conference championship on Sunday. Gaus fired a 79 to finish with a combined score of 254 (85-90-79). Grueter had an 82 in the final round to finish with a 259 (92-85-82). Sophomore Laura Grande continued her consistent play with a 91 to close out the weekend. She finished with a total score of 279 (96-92-91) to finish in 37th place. April 7, 2006 - Atlantic 10 Upset Special It's always fun to win a rivalry game, but it's even better when it comes during the postseason. The Flyers experienced that joy with a 4-3 upset over the No. 2 seed Xavier Musketeers in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championships. The Flyers managed to cling to three singles points for the win after taking the Musketeers on the doubles front. Tom Murphy and James O'Connell did their jobs at first and second singles, respectively, each netting wins. Playing at sixth singles, however, freshman David Peyton was the one that sent Xavier packing with a 7-6 (2), 1-6, 7-5 victory. March 3, 2006 - Flyers Hold Off Rams in A-10 Tournament Sixth-seeded Dayton snapped a four-year drought with a 71-63 win over 11th-seeded Rhode Island on Friday in the Opening Round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championships at SJU Alumni Memorial Field house. The win also gave the Flyers their 17th victory of the season, which is the most since the 1985-86 season and the second most in their Division I history. A-10 First Team pick Cara Wright led all players with 26 points and 13 rebounds. She connected on 11-of-14 shots from the field to go along with a 4-for-6 performance at the free throw line. The senior forward added four steals, two blocks and two assists. A-10 Second Team selection Jennifer Strong followed with 13 points including nine in the first half to go along with one blocked shot. Guard Karah Cloxton came off the bench to tally six assists and a steal while classmate Nikki Oakland added seven points, eight rebounds, five assists, four blocks and two steals. February 21, 2006 - Plummer Pulls Dayton Past Xavier, 66-62 Norman Plummer scored five points in the final 59 seconds to lead Dayton to a 66-62 victory over Xavier in front of 13,092 fans at UD Arena. Plummer finished with 15 points to earn the 44th Blackburn-McCafferty MVP Trophy in the 141st all-time meeting between the rival schools. Plummer's 15 points led all Flyers in just 27 minutes of play. The sophomore forward also pulled in a team-high seven rebounds while shooting 5-of-15 from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Brian Roberts and freshman Charles Little tallied 14 and 12 points respectively for Dayton who took advantage of 13 Xavier mistakes for an 18-8 advantage in points off turnovers. January 15, 2006 - Women's Basketball Outlasts Richmond, 67-62 Karah Cloxton scored a then career-high 11 points (with four assists in just 13 minutes) as the University of Dayton women's basketball team fended off the Richmond Spiders, 67-62 at UD Arena. Terri Ramsey scored a season-high 11 points and Cara Wright added her eighth double-double of the year. Jennifer Strong hit three free throws in the final minute to finish with 11 points, and Angela Cape added a season-high tying eight points and eight rebounds. The game featured five ties and eight lead changes - five lead changes in the second half -- but the Flyers used a 13-2 run midway through the second half to take control and managed to hold on in the final seconds thanks to a blocked shot from Ashley Armstrong on Araceli Gill. It was sweet revenge for UD on Gill, who spoiled the Flyers senior day last season by hitting a pair of free throws with 7.2 seconds left in Richmond's 78-77 overtime win. |
