| What is the size of the University of Dayton endowment? As of March 31, 2011, the University of Dayton held endowment funds totaling approximately $409 million. Why do we have an endowment? Our benefactors have generously created endowed funds at the University to provide income for scholarships, operational needs, and other University initiatives. How do we invest our endowment? The University manages its endowment assets along with other investments in its long-term investment pool. Collectively, these investments provide needed sources of income and support and are a key financial element in the University’s long-term success as these investments are held in perpetuity. In order to protect the long-term purchasing power of the invested funds, our primary goal in managing these investments is to achieve an above-market return with an acceptable level of risk. Other considerations are to ensure adequate liquidity in order to meet endowment spending policy obligations and to comply with socially-responsible investment guidelines that are in keeping with the University’s Catholic and Marianist heritage. What is our spending policy? The University has adopted an endowment spending policy that provides for an annual distribution of income from the endowment to support designated purposes and other University operating needs. The intent of the spending policy is to enable prudent financial management of the endowment funds by providing income to meet current endowed obligations while ensuring the existence of the endowment funds for use by the University in the future. In order to enable proper planning, the policy includes an annual increase in endowment distributions in to cover normal inflation. The current policy has been in place since 1986 and calls for an annual distribution of not less than 4% and not more than 5.5% of the market value of the endowment at the end of the previous fiscal year. In addition, the current policy also provides for an annual inflationary increase of 3.5%, subject to the 4% floor and the 5.5% ceiling noted above. The current endowment spending rate is 4.75%. |
